EP 100: Teacher to Trading Mentor – Breaking Stereotypes with Danielle Shay

In this episode of The Wall Street Coach Podcast, Kim Ann Curtin sits down with trader, investor, market analyst, and expert commentator, Danielle Shay. Danielle is VP of Options at Simpler Trading, where she runs trades and analysis in the trading room, teaches classes and webinars, and writes. You can also find Danielle regularly in the media, as she is an expert guest on CNBC, Fox News, TraderTV Live, Stockcharts, and more.

Danielle shares her unique journey into the world of trading, which began unexpectedly when her father introduced her to options trading as a way to support her family after becoming a single mom. Initially planning on law school, Danielle’s path changed when she started teaching English in Costa Rica. However, the birth of her son and the need for financial stability led her to explore other avenues. Skeptical at first, she began learning options trading online while juggling the challenges of single motherhood.

Danielle admits the early years were tough, especially since she didn’t have a strong background in math or science. Instead, she focused on recognizing patterns and applying that skill to technical analysis, which became her breakthrough. Danielle shares the method that allowed her to remove emotions from her trading decisions, making her approach more systematic and disciplined.

Danielle’s story is one of perseverance and determination. For two years, Danielle struggled and even considered giving up, but thanks to the support of her father and mentors, she pushed through and eventually found success.

EP 97: Why Most Traders Fail at Risk Management

In this episode of The Wall Street Coach Podcast, host Kim Ann Curtin welcomes back trading expert Brian Lee to tackle “Common Misconceptions About Risk.” Brian, a seasoned trader, delves into the pervasive myth that to make a lot, one must risk a lot. He emphasizes that risk is an ever-present factor, regardless of a trader’s experience level. Brian explains how improper risk management, such as risking large percentages of one’s account on a single trade, can lead to significant losses that are hard to recover from due to the concept of geometric returns and losses.

He advocates for consistent position sizing, highlighting that even risking a small percentage like 1% can reliably compound over time without exposing the trader to devastating losses. This episode sheds light on the importance of sticking to a well-thought-out risk management strategy, even during winning streaks, to avoid the pitfalls of overconfidence. Brian also reflects on his own journey, recognizing the critical importance of risk management early in his career, a lesson he shares to help both novice and experienced traders navigate the complexities of trading. This discussion is a must-listen for anyone looking to enhance their trading strategy and safeguard their investments.

Ep 96: Choosing the Best Broker for Active Traders and Retail Trading

In this episode of The Wall Street Coach Podcast, Matt Marino, Co-Founder of CenterPoint, shared insights into the inception and unique offerings of their brokerage firm and discussed the evolving landscape of retail trading. Marino, along with his four co-founders, identified a significant gap in the market for retail clients seeking to short low float stocks, a service previously reserved for institutional traders. Their mission was clear: to bring institutional-grade services to retail clients.

CenterPoint’s approach is rooted in building strong relationships with their clients, rather than just providing customer service. Marino emphasizes the importance of treating all clients, regardless of their size, with fairness and respect. This relationship-focused strategy has allowed CenterPoint to maintain a loyal client base for over a decade, fostering a sense of community and trust.

Reflecting on the future of retail trading, Marino noted that the COVID-19 pandemic era, often referred to as the “roaring kitty” era, significantly accelerated the trend of retail trading. The pandemic brought a new generation of traders into the market, similar to the dot-com boom of the early 2000s. This new wave of traders, particularly those in their twenties, are highly adept at navigating online environments, managing stress, and leveraging technology to trade.

The future of retail trading appears bright! Major brokerage firms, which once focused on promoting investment advisors, are now highlighting tools to support active trading. This shift indicates a broader acceptance and growth of retail trading. More people are gaining access to sophisticated trading tools, creating a dynamic and volatile market environment.

Marino also shared that while trading can be highly rewarding, it is essential for aspiring traders to be honest with themselves about their capabilities and limitations. Success in trading requires a mix of patience, the ability to manage risk, and the fortitude to recognize when it’s not working.

For those looking to explore what CenterPoint has to offer, the firm provides a comprehensive suite of tools and services designed to meet the diverse needs of traders, backed by a team that genuinely cares about their success. CenterPoint is currently offering 60 days of commission-free trading for new clients, providing an excellent opportunity to experience their exceptional service firsthand.

Ep 94: Bouncing Back from Trading Losses – Lessons from Matt ‘PAX’ Kenah

From Setbacks to Success

In the fast-paced world of trading, success stories often come wrapped in tales of perseverance and resilience. Matt “Pax” Kenah is, a trader whose journey embodies the highs and lows of the financial markets.

In this podcast interview, Pax opens up about his tumultuous path to success. From personal tragedies to professional setbacks, he faced it all with unwavering determination. Despite the challenges, Pax found solace in the lessons learned along the way.

One pivotal moment was his experience during the MF Global crisis in 2011. After significant losses, he was forced to confront his ego and redefine his approach to trading. He shifted his focus from chasing profits to building a solid foundation based on process and risk management.

With the support of his wife and a renewed sense of purpose, Pax embarked on a journey of self-discovery. He started small, trading one and two lots, with a clear goal in mind: to end each day with a positive outcome and to develop a consistent trading process.

Over time, Pax’s disciplined approach paid off. As volatility increased, so did his confidence. By staying true to his principles and prioritizing long-term success over short-term gains, Pax achieved a level of financial stability he once thought impossible.

Looking back, Pax acknowledges the role that adversity played in shaping his success. Without the hardships of the past, he wouldn’t be the trader—or the person—he is today. Through perseverance and resilience, Pax transformed setbacks into stepping stones toward a brighter future.

We can all draw inspiration from Pax’s journey. In a world where uncertainty is constant, it’s not the failures that define us but how we choose to respond to them. If you are ready to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and emerge stronger on the other side, this episode is for you!

Despite experiencing setbacks, including “blowing up” his account multiple times in the early years, Stan remained resilient and committed to mastering the markets. Ep 91: Angry After Trading? Discover This Quick Anger-Release Trick

Transformative Healing: A Journey from Anger to Liberation

In this podcast episode, I had the pleasure of hosting my good friend Dave Shoemaker, the owner of the renowned Ninth Wave Tattoo Shop in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Dave supported me through a very vulnerable and transformative moment in my life which culminated in a cathartic release of anger.

This journey of healing and self-discovery shows the power of unconventional methods in addressing suppressed emotions in a safe and healthy way.

For traders, navigating the tumultuous waters of financial markets can often leave them grappling with intense emotions, particularly the underexplored aspect of anger. The expression of anger in the trading world is seldom discussed openly, and the pressure to maintain composure can lead traders to suppress these emotions. Acknowledging and addressing the source of anger, whether it stems from market volatility, unexpected losses, or external factors, is crucial.

Just as I found healing in an unconventional way, traders may find therapeutic release in constructive outlets tailored to their unique experiences. This could involve debriefing sessions, journaling, or even seeking professional guidance to process and channel the anger effectively. Understanding that anger is a natural response to the challenges of trading, and having the tools to navigate it, can contribute to a trader’s overall mental well-being and resilience in the dynamic world of finance.

Join us as we explore the profound impact of expressing and processing emotions, in a physical and symbolic manner, to find relief and balance.
