Ep 70: Victoria Loorz on Connection, Healing, & Nature For Traders
Are you feeling burned out? Are you feeling a lack of connection and balance in your life? This interview with “wild church pastor” and author Victoria Loorz could point you in the right direction.
Successful day traders, executives, and other high-achieving individuals often feel pressure to work at all hours. As a result, they can feel detached from the world and from other people.
This interview is an invitation to reconnect. In this episode of The Wall Street Coach Podcast, Kim Ann Curtin connects with Victoria Loorz, author of the beautiful book, “Church of the Wild: Nature Invites Us into the Sacred.”
About Victoria Loorz
Victoria Loorz, MDiv, is a “wild church pastor,” an “eco-spiritual director,” author, and co-founder of several transformation-focused organizations focused on the integration of nature and spirituality.
After twenty years as a pastor of indoor churches, Victoria launched the first Church of the Wild, in Ojai CA. She then co-founded the ecumenical Wild Church Network, an affiliation of congregations across North America that meet exclusively outdoors. It was an incredible year for The Wall Street Coach. I’ve had some off-the-charts experiences…
For instance, I recently witnessed something truly awe-inspiring. Mauna Loa — the largest active volcano in the world — erupted for the first time in almost 40 years. Talk about a spectacular force of nature!
I spent time at the nearby Pu’u Huluhulu Ranch to witness this natural wonder — and to eat some excellent food in the company of old friends!
Got to spend last night at Pu’u huluhulu Ranch (across from Mauna Loa eruption) so to commune some more with Madame Pele eat excellent Portuguese soup and enjoy laughter and the good sh*t with some old friends. #luckyilivehawaiipic.twitter.com/TMrVqB2eac
I drop new episodes regularly — be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel and check out the Podcast page on my website to stay up-to-date. I’m really proud of all that the podcast has accomplished and thankful for my amazing guests and loyal listeners.
Amazing Twitter Spaces
In recent months, I’ve been doing something a little different with my podcast format. Many episodes follow a two-part format: first, a one-on-one interview, followed by a live recording of a Twitter Space. (P.S. Do you follow me on Twitter? If not, find me here.)
Speaking of Shay, ours was her first-ever Twitter Space! It was an honor to learn from this inspiring woman trader — check out the episode here, or below:
Interviews + Podcast Features
Flip the mic! I had the pleasure of being interviewed by some fine people and outlets this year!
First up, if you haven’t seen legendary trader Brian Lee’s interview with me, check it out here. We talked about trading psychology, happiness, and what Brian has learned about maintaining balance. It’s great medicine for any traders who may have struggled with maintaining equilibrium in the 2022 market!
I was also featured on the Magnet Minutes Podcast with Jordan Kimmel. In the interview, we discussed my book, “Transforming Wall Street,” the importance of professionals using and being open to receiving coaching, and some ideas on how to get Wall Street back to serving its investors with a little more integrity through conscious compassion.
More recently, I was featured on The Grant Williams Podcast. If you’re not familiar with this 30+ year stock market and investing veteran, check out his website — and my interview with him a few months back.
Speaking + Events
Wow. I’ve taken part in some fantastic events this year, both virtual and live, including but not limited to The MoneyShow Virtual Expo and live events in a variety of different trading communities.
One event that left a huge impact on me this year? The recent Traders4ACause event in Las Vegas. I hosted a presentation and I took part in a panel discussion at the event.
I’ve been a follower of the group for some time. In fact, I featured the group’s Executive Director, Zach Schellhaas, on The Wall Street Coach Podcast earlier this year. Check out the episode here.
The event was a veritable who’s who of traders. I got to see traders who I haven’t seen in a long time, like Brian Lee. I also got to meet several figures from the finance community that I’ve been following for years.
Regular followers of my podcast will know the name Shane Dorian. He’s a big wave surfer-slash-trader, but more importantly, one of the best people I know.
He’s been on the podcast before — check out the episode here. More recently he joined me as a guest host on a special two-part episode featuring Charles Harris.
A few months ago, we finally met in person. After so many great conversations, it was a wonderful experience to meet and break bread in person! Thank you, Shane, for being you.
What a day! After 4 interviews, I finally got to meet legendary big wave surfer + trader @DorianShane88 in person!!
We talked trading, the importance of EQ (emotional intelligence), & of course surfing
Meeting the World-Record-Breaking Lat 35 Women’s Rowing Team in Hawaii
I love that my chosen career path puts me in sometimes unexpected places.
When my strategic partner Jason Caldwell (check out his podcast episode here) was heading to Hawaii to help his women’s rowing team break the world record, I was there to greet them!
Jason is an author, adventure athlete, and leadership coach. He’s also the founder & coach of Lat 35’s world record-breaking women’s crew!
Recently, he led a group of four incredible female rowers — Libby Costello, Sophia Denison Johnston, Brooke Downes, and Adrienne Smith, on the Great Pacific Race. They journeyed all the way from California to Hawaii, more than 2400 miles, in 34 days, 14 hours, and 11 minutes — a new world record!
That’s not all — the Lat 35 team also raised money for the Anxiety and Depression Association of America during their historic journey.
I’m honored that I was able to greet them, and I’m honored to know Jason!
Wooo hoooo Lat35 Team & Jason Caldwell! You put together a World Record Breaking crew for the Pacific Race rowing across the pacific! pic.twitter.com/KBAGQiUDj0
When I started my podcast, I had no idea where it would go and where it would take me. This year, I’m proud to say that I passed the 1k follower milestone — and counting!
This is a great time to express my thanks to everyone who played a part in getting The Wall Street Coach Podcast to where it is today.
I couldn’t have gotten here without such amazing podcast guests and listeners. So … Thank YOU!
I’ve been a huge fan of Homeboy Industries and their entire mission for years.
If you’re not familiar with this non-profit group, I encourage you to check them out. They’re dedicated to improving the lives of former gang members through rehab and re-entry programs.
I strongly encourage everyone to check out the book by founder Father Greg Boyle, “Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion” — it’s a powerful reminder that we are all worthy of love and belonging.
This year, I had the pleasure of connecting with Homeboy’s CEO, Thomas Vozzo, on the podcast.
Everyone — traders, executives, and everyone in between — can learn something from his radical approach to leadership & life.
Living in Hawaii
Imagine being awed every single day by where you live. That’s my life in Hawaii!
Earlier, I mentioned how I got to witness Mauna Loa erupting. Moments like that are constant reminders of how fortunate I am to live in this beautiful place.
As a born and bred New Yorker, I never saw this life coming. But while trying to make time and space to write my book “Transforming Wall Street,” the universe unexpectedly beckoned me to this new home.
Sometimes I miss New York — that’s why I have a little slice of it in my office. But overall, I’m filled with gratitude to be here.
As an NYC native, I sometimes miss “home”…
But I came up with a remedy!
My office is a little city in the middle of the country .
It’s been an amazing year, and I’m happy to have some quiet time to rest and relax over the holidays. But there’s a lot more to come in 2023!
I have a lot of great podcast guests and new projects coming. I’m also excited about what’s going on with past podcast guests.
For instance, listeners may remember last year, when Frank Casey joined me on The Wall Street Coach Podcast. (He’s also featured as one of The Wall Street 50 in my book, “Transforming Wall Street.”) Frank was integral in identifying and taking down the largest Ponzi scheme in history built by the infamous Bernie Madoff. I’m thrilled to share that Frank will be in Netflix’s 4-part docuseries, “Madoff, The Monster of Wall Street,” launching on January 4th! Learn more here.
What are Your Goals for 2023?
I know that I stretched and grew a lot in 2022. I’m looking forward to the year ahead.
How about you?
If you’re interested in becoming more self-aware in the coming year, you may want to seek out coaching.
If you’re like many other high-achieving individuals, you tend to beat yourself up for mistakes and perceived failures. That makes it tough to get into a space of neutrality from which you can grow.
It doesn’t set the stage for true growth.
As a coach, I help people become self-aware. One of the ways I do that is by helping them dim the noise of their inner gremlins and help them foster more self-empathy.
If you’re interested in this type of work, I encourage you to reach out.

Ep 69: Shay Huang of Humbled Trader: The Power of Not Giving Up
46:19 – VFX and how it helped prepare Shay for trading
48:25 – The crucial importance of EQ for traders + final words
Ep 69: Shay Huang of Humbled Trader: The Power of Not Giving Up
There are a lot of things worth knowing about Shay Huang, AKA Humbled Trader. But let’s start with two important ones:
She’s REAL. One of Shay’s taglines is “no Lambos here, only reality.” She’s not afraid to talk openly about her losses (like the $20K loss she talks about on the episode!) or the struggles she faced as she made her way as a trader.
She’s FUNNY. Shay jokes that she’s working on her reel for Saturday Night Live — whether or not she ever makes a comedic TV debut, her quick wit combined with warmth and know-how makes this interview (and every video on her wildly popular YouTube channel) a must-watch.
Traders, you don’t want to miss this two-part episode featuring an interview and a live Twitter Space recording with Shay. In it, you’ll learn about her journey from the grueling VFX field to trading, how she maintains work-life balance, and why it’s so important to love trading itself — not just money.
Shay boasts over 900K engaged subscribers and also runs her very own trading community — once you check out the interview, you’ll understand why she’s so popular.
Prepare to learn, laugh, and be inspired on your own trading journey.
About Shay Huang
Prior to day trading full-time for a living, Shay worked in the labor-intensive film and VFX industry. While the compensation wasn’t bad, the hours were long and draining on both the mind and body. So after several years of blood, sweat and equity, Shay began looking for a way out… that’s when she discovered day trading.
Just like most beginner traders, Shay soon learned that trading the markets was anything BUT easy.
She encountered many failures and a lot of days where she felt like giving up. Once, Shay bashed her computer and cried in tears when she lost over $20,000 following chat room alerts from various “trading gurus.”
After more than a year of struggling and drowning in deep red, Shay finally learned that trading isn’t about finding the “perfect” system. It’s about understanding psychology, trading price action (not patterns), and following a structured risk management system.
It was only after Shay started prioritizing risk over reward, and paired regiment with a set of high-probability trading strategies, that she finally found real consistency in her day trading profits.
After eight years of grinding in the markets, Shay now trades full-time from home, and spends her free time doing the things she loves. You can catch her snowboarding in the winter, and hiking and kayaking in the summer.
Shay also makes entertaining and educational YouTube videos to share her journey, her lessons, and build up her comedy reel for her Saturday Night Live audition… maybe someday.
Shay now boasts over 900K engaged subscribers and also runs her very own trading community. She is also involved in the trading community and was part of the recent Traders4ACause event. Feel free to find out more about Shay at www.humbledtrader.com.
